A Hunter can be fun to play and he is famous for having a pet with him while the Hunter himself takes out enemies from a distance. At first you will be playing without a pet but around level 10 you will be given several Hunter specific quests with as final reward the ability to tame beasts which then become your pet.

Once you have a pet at your side you will see that leveling a Hunter is a real piece of cake. While you stand back firing your bullets or arrows your pet tanks the enemy and keeps it at distance which means that you will hardly get hit. One of these abilities is the ability to place trap which can do quite a bit of damage and freeze or slow a target. Hunters can only have one trap active at the time but it is great anyway. Hunters are also known for their ability to Feign Death which makes them act as if they are dead which resets fights and can save the Hunter from tricky situations.

Basically a Hunter is nice to play when you like to play alone but it must be said that a Hunter is also a valuable in raids, dungeons and PvP scenarios. The Hunters become even stronger through the talent trees and because of their traps which can come in handy in instances and PvP as well they are very nice to have in your team. The Hunter’s controllable pet adds to the overall damage and it can also tank or offtank in certain situations.

It’s not all about the pet though when we talk about Hunters, they themselves can deal heavy amounts of damage and have other abilities that can aid the raid like Misdirect, which is used to misdirect threat to the tank. The tank will have an easier time tanking while the healer only has to focus his heals on the tank and the damage dealers don’t have to watch their agro all the time. The Hunter class is unique and this is the reason why many people have decided to play a Hunter in the past.

It can be a hard task to find a spot in a party or raid from time to time and that is why it is advised to join a guild so you’ll have an easier time to do some instances. One of the most important things is that you have a build that suits you best and allows you to assist the group in the best way possible or to deal massive amounts of damage. The Hunter’s talent trees are called Survival, Marksmanship and Beast Mastery.

Beast Mastery is definitely the best talent tree for leveling. The Pet gets a lot of nice boosts in this tree which makes the job a lot easier and the player doesn’t even have to do anything in most cases. On top of an immensely strong pet a Beast Master Hunter will also be able to run faster which also increases the leveling speed.

As a Marksmanship Hunter you will gain access to a variety of shots and stings, basically increasing your damage. The Marksmanship talent build is often used by raiding Hunters. The Survival talent tree hasn’t always been really good but today it is great for PvP Hunters.

The Survival talent tree also gives a boost to the Hunter’s traps and also gives him more Stamina etc. Besides this a Survival Hunter will also receive a couple shots that are great for PvP like Explosive Shot and Shatter Shot.

Starting Out

One of the main keys to success in this class, is making sure that your character is right for the job. Knowledge of personal strengths allows you to match with the abilities of a hunter. Although the name tends to conjure up pictures of tracking down and shooting animals, the hunter class is much more than that. Playing this can be a bit tricky as the hunter has specific  strengths and weaknesses.

What a hunter excels at: Ranged warfare, including the use of bows, guns or crossbows. They are incredibly effective at dispatching their enemies with these means. Survival and tracking are two other skills that the hunter has under its belt. Much of the damage taken from an attack can be taken by a pet in this class, giving more time for play. An issue arising in lower levels can be that the hunter is unable to acquire armor until level 40 and so one difficulty the hunter encounters is Melee fighting. Now that you are aware of the hunters skills, you can now plan your attack. Victory can be gained by remaining far from danger. It is very important to invest in a pet as a hunter since they can take up the slack when it comes to melee fighting. While they are getting up close and personal, the hunter can stay back and deal out damage from a distance.

Your hunter and choosing the right profession

Now that you’ve decided to play this class, you’re going to need to pick a profession that meshes well with a hunter’s innate abilities. The best professions to choose are skinning and leatherworking as this will allow you to make your own armor. Mining and skinning are two other professions that mix well, these together allow the player to buy weapons and armor. The professions that really don’t mesh well with a hunter are alchemy, tailoring or enchanting.

The other classes may find these professions very useful, where as the hunter gains no benefit. Herbalism on the other hand can be used for making potions to enable healing and quite a good profession in this respect. This is very helpful until you can get a pet to aid  you with melee fighting.

The Weapons

As we mentioned previously, the hunter shines at ranged warfare. You may just want to focus on crossbows and bows, unless you develop the skill to use guns as well. When you first start out, you’ll get a pretty basic bow, but you can purchase a more effective one as you progressive through the levels that will earn you more ability and help you become more accurate.
